What is it?
The term preppy was derived from the
preparatory schools in America, where the American upper-class society sent
their children. They can be closely tied with the Ivy League in the northeast
part of America. Such prestigious universities include, Harvard, Yale, Brown.

In 1980, Lisa Birnbach’s created a handbook
called the Official Preppy Handbook, which was written to mock the upper-class
students in society. However, it ended up glamorizing the subculture of
dressing in a high-class manner.
As you can see from the photos, preppy
style is very unique and aims to show the audience the sophisticated and the
clean cut look. They make use of pastel colours, layered with different items
of clothing, including waistcoats, wool jumpers and trench coats.
Lately, we have seen an emergence of preppy
styles in Australia where local designers have imitated the preppy look. Men
have begun to move out of the denim casual look and substituted it for chinos
and a well-fitted blazer. Another look that’s been taking the men’s fashion by
storm is the fitted chinos rolled up to their ankles coupled with pastel
coloured socks.

It’s no surprise that the Australian men’s
fashion adopted the preppy style. International designers such as Ralph Lauren
have proven to be the leading brands that have promoted the preppy style look
for decades. Australian brands such as Saba, Calibre, Country Road and Marcs
have designed and created new style of men’s clothing to cater for the preppy
look.
